1990 Mercedes-Benz 500SL AMG
The 1990 Mercedes-Benz 500SL AMG is the rarest car in the collection — an R129 wearing the genuine Gen1 AMG body kit and original AMG wheels, imported under previous ownership with CARB certification, and acquired because cars in this specification simply don't appear. The AMG treatment here is not an aftermarket conversion or a parts-bin approximation: the body kit, the wheels, and the 5.0-liter V8 are all original, untouched. What the car needed was not mechanical revival but recommissioning: a complete convertible top restoration with a new GAHH German Classic fabric hood, a fully rebuilt hydraulic cylinder set from Top Hydraulics, a fresh control module, new headlamps, wiper motor, and body moldings — everything required to make a thirty-five-year-old open-top grand tourer usable again without altering what made it worth preserving. Over $10,000 in documented parts and labor.
For me, this is the truest and best representation of the R129, without compromise. The car just needs new tires for true enjoyment. A seamless sound upgrade was made under previous ownership and I added a wireless Apple CarPlay headunit.
